Adding to the trend of recording educational material on video for distribution outside the physical classroom is Piyush Agarwal, founder of Bangalore-based Aurus Network.

A Stanford dropout, he says, “I use a lot of online educational videos by expert teachers from different places. Not everyone has resources like Stanford—especially in India.”

Agarwal has found a way to broadcast at very low bandwidths, using simple studio equipment and an internet connection. Founded in 2010, Aurus received funding (sub-$1 million) from the Indian Angels Network and now has 30 clients including IIT-Kanpur, IIT-Patna and Amity University.

Agarwal was involved with distance learning programmes at Stanford and knows that current solutions are expensive and inefficient.

Aurus’s service is entirely cloud-based and they now plan to create an online marketplace where educational institutes can sell their own content. It serves 1,500-plus locations providing content to 10 to 100 students each.
