600,000 is the number of tourists expected at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil—despite protests and controversy surrounding the tournament; there were 309,554 visitors for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Foreign tourists are expected to spend $2.6 billion in Brazil, compared to $339 million (inflation adjusted) spent in South Africa. Over the past decade, Brazil has welcomed roughly 5 million tourists a year; by hosting the World Cup, it is expecting total tourist influx to increase to 7.5 million.
