The 2 percentage point across-the-board increase in excise duty will jack up the prices of all manufactured products, such as automobiles and consumer durables. The return of the 5 percent customs duty on crude oil and Rs.1 per litre on petroleum products is also likely to permeate through the economy, jacking up prices in what is known in economic parlance as cost-push inflation.
