Traveling by train from Lucknow to Delhi two years ago, I got a sense of the price that the common man pays for the slow pace of decision-making by the powers that be. As the overcrowded train took a winding turn, I spotted a column of elbows and heads jutting out of the windows of the neighboring general compartments. This pathetic sight was naturally the result of a shortage of additional coaches and locomotives.
But when will the railways buy the coaches and locomotives that the system needs? How long will the average rail traveler have to put up with sleeping on the floor or fitting in like cattle?
Inspite of following all the rules and regulations so many scams are coming out, eg: 2g, coalgate, and many more. Railways being frightened to take a decision only makes mockery of our system, rules and regulations.
on Sep 4, 2012Good article but misleading title. Its not just the poor that are unable to find a seat on our trains, there is a super-high demand for seats in most routes, and the booking systems (both online and over-the-counter) are always under stress. Wanna know what I am talking about: try booking a train ticket around Diwali.
on Jul 22, 2012This is the price we have to pay for "subsidy" economy which advances the problems for another day. The government themselves have a "coolie" mentality and lives for the day, they live on daily wages of "votes" for the immediate election - if you notice, everytime there's an election around the corner anywhere in the country - there's a policy paralysis, all important decisions are deferred. 60 years after independence, what hell happened to good governance ? For all that brilliance and verbal jugglery - kapil sibbal, abhishek manu singhvi, sonia, rahul and the whole pack including the "economist" Manmohan singh look like a pack of jokers! Its pathetic
on Apr 25, 2012One of the most archaic and non transparent system is seen in the railway catering, mostly handled by IRCTC contractors. There is no system of dispaly of price list. Rates are orally conveyed by the catering staff and amount is collcted by hand from passengers. There is no system of issuing receipts for the cash collected. There is no way of a passenger verifying the rates of the items supplied and the quantity of the items supplied. I think CAG should look into this entire issue.
