The India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), signed in July 2025, represents a significant win for India. Textiles, footwear, carpets, automobiles, seafood, and fresh fruits, valued at about $6.5 billion, which constitute about 45 percent of what India currently exports to the UK, will now be duty-free. As a major milestone for India’s Aerospace & Defence industry, Tata Advanced Systems Limited and Airbus inaugurated the Final Assembly Line (FAL) complex for the manufacture of the Airbus C295 aircraft in Vadodara in October 2024. This is the first aircraft manufacturing contract for the private sector in India. The programme involves the delivery of 40 C295 aircraft to the Indian Air Force. The ecosystem begins with the sourcing of raw materials and manufacture of up to 13,000 detailed parts in Nagpur, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. These are then assembled into larger components at the Main Component Assembly site in Hyderabad, and shipped to the FAL in Vadodara, Gujarat. The first C295 will roll out of the facility in September 2026.

In a major breakthrough, Indian Council of Agricultural Research released two genome-edited varieties of rice in May 2025, marking it as the first achievement of its kind in the world. The new varieties, which have been developed indigenously by scientists using the revolutionary CRISPR-Cas9 genome-editing technology, are climate-resilient, requiring less water to grow, and produce bigger yields with lower emissions. When Dr Satendra Kumar Mangrauthia and his team at Indian Institute of Rice Research, Hyderabad, began work on a rice variety, no expert labs or protocols for genome editing existed in India. They had to develop everything from scratch—from editing protocols to transformation techniques.

The Indian Railways, in July 2025, successfully tested the first hydrogen-powered coach at its Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai. This is a significant step for the Railways, a key player in India’s mission to support zero carbon emission goals as a clean energy source. Being a highly flammable gas, the mounting structure of hydrogen cylinders and fuel cells on driving power cars involves critical safety challenges.
