In a Nutshell
  • ATF prices for charters rise over 115 percent in April
  • Scheduled carriers see ATF price hike of around 8-10 percent
  • India has adequate ATF supply for the next 60 days

Aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices for non-scheduled operators and charter services have been raised to over Rs2 lakh per kilolitre (kL) across metro cities from April 1, even as rates for scheduled domestic airlines remain unchanged.

In Delhi, ATF for non-scheduled carriers has been increased to Rs2,07,341.22 per kL from Rs96,638 in March, an increase of over 115 percent. In Kolkata, prices stand at Rs2,05,955.33 compared to Rs99,587.14 in the previous month. Chennai has recorded ATF prices at Rs2,14,597.66, up from Rs1,00,280.49, while in Mumbai, rates have been raised to Rs1,94,968.67 from Rs90,451.87.

For scheduled carriers, ATF prices have been increased on a monthly basis as well. In Delhi, they rose to Rs1,04,927 per kL in April from Rs96,638.14 in March, an increase of about 8.6 per cent. Kolkata saw prices rise to Rs 1,09,450 from Rs99,587.14, while Mumbai recorded Rs98,247 compared to Rs90,451.87 in March. Chennai prices stood at Rs1,09,873, up from Rs1,00,280.49.

The revision comes amid disruptions linked to the ongoing West Asia conflict, which has led to airspace restrictions, longer flight routes and higher fuel consumption for airlines.

Airlines had imposed fuel surcharges last month, with domestic tickets seeing an additional charge of about Rs399 and higher surcharges on international routes.

"Without knowing the length and intensity of the war in the Middle East [West Asia], it is impossible to quantify the full impact that it will have on airline prospects. But some things are already clear. Fuel costs have risen sharply. With tight capacity and thin margins, airfares are already rising,” Director General William (Willie) Walsh said, according to a report by PTI on Tuesday. Walsh has also been appointed the next CEO of IndiGo and is expected to take charge in August.

Meanwhile, Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu remains confident in India's ATF supplies for the near term. “We have an adequate supply of ATF in our country right now. The regular process is that the production that happens for ATF, almost half of it is for domestic consumption and half is exported,” he said in the Rajya Sabha on Monday. “We have supplies for the next 60 days without any interruption, and we don’t foresee any kind of problem in the ATF production in our country.”

Fuel accounts for about 40 percent of airline operating costs, and ATF prices are revised monthly by oil marketing companies based on global benchmarks.
