The Kochi-Muziri Biennale—India’s first biennale—aims to celebrate not just contemporary art, but the cosmopolitan legacy of Kochi, and its predecessor, the ancient port of Muziris. The exhibition will host the works of Indian and international artistes, in mediums like film, installation, painting, sculpture, new media and performance art. Heritage buildings and unused structures—for instance, 100,000 sq ft amid the Mattanchery Warehouses, a hub for Kerala’s spice trade since the 14th century—will also be converted to exhibition venues. The Biennale will feature 90 artists from 24 countries and includes the likes of Atul Dodiya, Ernesto Neto, Anita Dube, M.I.A., and Joseph Semah. Programmes include talks, seminars, workshops, music and screenings. Ten international films, selected by Adoor Gopalakrishnan, will also be screened.
