In a Nutshell
Google will let Gmail users change their email address without creating a new account, keeping all files and settings intact. The feature rolls out first in the US, allows gradual transition, but is limited to personal accounts and can be used once a year.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced on X on March 31 that users will soon be able to change their email addresses without creating a new account. The update, which was long awaited and was considered one of Gmail’s oldest limitations, could reshape how users manage their digital identities. It comes as good news for active Gmail users, which are close to two billion globally, as per reports.
In his post Pichai wrote: “2004 was a good year, but your Gmail address doesn't need to be stuck in it. To say goodbye to v0t3f0rp3dr02004@gmail.com or mrbrightside416@gmail.com (or whatever you were into at the time), go to your Google Account settings and choose any name available.”
Since its launch in 2004, Gmail has not allowed users to modify the username portion of their email IDs, leaving them stuck with outdated or unprofessional handles. With this change, users can now update their email identity while keeping their entire account ecosystem intact.
The important thing to note is that this announcement will be rolled out in phases in countries, starting with the US. It isn’t clear when it’ll be ready for execution in India.
How to change your Gmail Address
Go to your Google Account (Personal Info > Email)
Tap ‘Change Google Account email’ if the option is available
Users can change their Gmail address while retaining all their emails, files, contacts, and settings, eliminating the need for tedious account migrations.
The old email address will continue to work and messages sent to the previous address will still reach the same inbox, allowing users to transition gradually without missing important communication.
Since the old email remains functional, users don’t have to rush to update their credentials across banking, social media, and other linked platforms.
The feature will act as a boost to the user’s professional presence allowing him/her to replace outdated or informal email IDs with cleaner, more professional ones.
The update will allow for full continuity across Google services, including Drive, Photos, and YouTube, without requiring reconfiguration.
What can be the challenges
The feature comes with limited availability at the moment as it is expected to roll out gradually, and there are usage restrictions, allowing users to change the ID only once every year.
Experts warn that scammers could exploit the change through phishing attempts.
Some third-party apps and services may still rely on the old email, requiring manual updates and potentially causing temporary login issues.
The feature will only work on personal accounts and not for Google Workspace users.
What happens to your old email ID?
Your old Gmail ID is locked to your account. It cannot be registered by someone else.
