Weirdly EnoughThe Haryana government, we hear, thinks that golf is not a sport. While we agree that it doesn’t quite require the athleticism that even, say, cricket demands, we do think that it has better creds to be regarded as a sport than chess or Formula One.
It does get so many of our corporate chieftains out into the open air and postponing their coronaries with 18 holes worth of Sunday stroll. (Stay off the golf carts, lads!) And it’s true that much business and networking is done on the links as well as cheerleaders for business, therefore, we thoroughly approve.
What we just can’t understand is Haryana’s reported move to collect entertainment tax from revenues from golf. Entertainment? Golf? Even Lok Sabha debates have more entertainment value than the pastime that Mark Twain famously described as “a good walk ruined.”
We wonder what Kapil Dev, Haryana’s most famous sports star, now a keen golfer, has to say about this.
