India’s export engine is shifting gears. While total vehicle shipments surged 19% to about 5.4 million units in FY25, the passenger car segment’s global footprint is fading. Its share of total exports has plummeted from 17.3% in FY17 to just 7.2% in FY26. As two-wheelers now command nearly 80% of shipments, the shrinking car share signals a loss of competitiveness in high-value global segments despite robust overall volumes.
