We are a country that came together under adversity, putting aside our vast array of differences to fight off a common foe. More than sixty years after we won the right to call this affiliation a nation, many of those divisions still exist. Whether they should coexist in harmony or be put away in the interests of harmony is not the point. What is undeniable is that at times it seems those differences will tear us apart. Amidst the mishmash of our many religions, cultures, languages, geographies, cuisines, climates, skin colours, traditions and aspirations, strong forces slug it out in front of us every day.

·         Socialism versus communism versus capitalism
·         Liberalisation versus unscrupulous opportunism
·         Conservation and pollution control and reduction versus a growing economy’s much needed minerals and land and the need for more industry and jobs
·         Globalisation versus jingoism, xenophobia or is it patriotic protectionism?
·         Development and growth
·         Increasing wealth and increasing poverty
·         Security against terrorism versus personal liberty and freedom
·         Freedom of speech versus a culture of taking offence
·         Modernism versus tradition
·         Secularism versus fervent religiosity
·         Democracy versus the parent state versus authoritarianism from both moral guardians and civil society
·         Nepotism
·         Corruption

We could go on, but let’s pause.

Let’s catch our breath, slow our pulse down just a bit, and ask you, our readers, to give us your take on this, our fractured country. Can you capture this uneasy balance with your lens?
