Pope Francis with US president Barack Obama at Joint Base Andrews at Maryland in the US on September 22. The Pope, who was on his first visit to the US, made a special appeal to Americans to welcome immigrants. He also called for a fairer world economy, the abolition of death penalty and the protection of ethnic and religious minorities. During his speech on the White House South Lawn, the pontiff lauded Obama’s efforts to reduce air pollution as “encouraging”.
