Four airlines in India are among the world's cheapest, but the country's global passenger traffic is dominated by foreign carriers

Although four Indian airlines feature on the list, in contrast to other countries, India’s global passenger traffic is dominated by foreign carriers: Foreign airlines had a 61.2 percent share of passenger traffic to and from India between October and December 2017. This is also because there are 89 foreign airlines compared to five Indian ones with global operations. Successive Indian governments have given flying rights to global carriers while restricting overseas operations for domestic ones.
