The cost of US-produced films surged post-2020, with average budgets over $60 million as studios doubled down on fewer, more expensive theatrical releases
US film production is getting pricier, but the volume drop is a concern. The average budget has soared from $51 million in 2019 to $64 million in 2025. Costs are expected to rise further by 31 percent to a projected $83 million in 2026, despite a fall in annual movies. High domestic costs are seemingly squeezing out the mid-budget slate in favour of fewer, more expensive blockbusters.
