The Sound and the Purity
The best headphones have always offered a more intimate experience of music—in addition to insulation from the vagaries of room acoustics—for far less money than speakers with comparable sound. Cutting-edge, over-the-ear headphones put you in a high-fidelity zone in a way buds never can. The AKG N90Q cancels whatever noise makes its way past the earcups and has a built-in DAC for playing even hi-res digital recordings. Audio-Technica’s ATH-W1000Z offers rich sound in luxurious teak earcups with its “double air damping system” for improved bass. Sennheiser’s Momentum 2nd Generation gets its sound from nearly 50 years of advanced headphone building and leather from the same source as Rolls-Royce. And the HiFiMan HE1000 trades off sound isolation for greater sound-stage detail. To max it all out, use them with headphone amps. You won’t  believe your ears.
