The co-founder and former chief executive of Infosys ran unsuccessfully for the 2014 general elections on a Congress ticket from south Bangalore. In March, he stepped down as head of the Unique Identification Authority of India, which had provided identity numbers to 600 million Indian residents during his five-year tenure. While there was speculation that the programme would be discontinued, the Modi government has continued to back it. Nilekani, who's currently co-writing a book called Rebooting Government, denied that he was going back to work at Infosys.
