A former chemist, he set up the $460 million (revenues) Alkem Laboratories in 1974 and grew it into one of India's top 10 pharma firms. Cousin Basudeo Narain Singh helps him run the generics company though he is still chairman, and continues to work a full day. To attain its revenue target of $1 billion by 2017, Alkem has been expanding overseas. It is also eyeing acquisitions; it recently bought Clindac A (an acne gel brand) from Swiss firm Galderma. Grandson Sandeep oversees the company's international operations.
