Danube Cycleway, Germany
Europe’s first cycle path follows the beautiful Danube river as it meanders from Germany to the Black Sea via Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania. This route provides a fantastic introduction to leisurely, family-friendly cycle touring, with safe and easy rides along flat paths that are well maintained. The most popular, a 340 km-long trail downstream starts in Germany, in the town of Passau, and goes all the way to Vienna, along a delightful countryside past Benedictine abbeys, medieval castles and the Wachau region, which is a world heritage site. And why stop in Vienna? Continue on to Budapest in Hungary, and compare the contrasts between the Western and more exotic Eastern European sides.
