India is the world's second most populous country and still most of its people consider it a taboo to talk about their sexual life and yet remain obsessed with it. Research suggests that every other Indian man is worried over “size” and “frequency” while for Indian women, “quality” and “foreplay” remain the points of concern besides unwanted pregnancies, of course.

Oh yes, India couldn’t be more paradoxical as a society. It is because of this reason, and to help you "Get your sex life back" here we have Sexologist, recently awarded "Swasth Bharat Ratan" Dr. Saransh Jain, who is one of the most respected psychosexual experts in India and the Managing Director of Dr. S.K Jain‘s Burlington Clinic (P) Ltd., Lucknow.

Dr. Saransh Jain is India’s first Psychosexologist from “The American Board of Sexology & American College of Sexologists”. He is also the youngest and first ever Psychosexologist to receive Gold Medal for outstanding achievement and personal endeavor in the field of Sexual medicine, Urology, Infertility & Andrology.

He is the first ever Asian Psychosexologist to get the honor of being the Vice President of the Psychosexual Society of London. Furthermore, he is amongst India’s first sex specialists to be a part of European Sexual Medicine Research Society, the world’s leading society for research on sexual problems.

So here’s his take on how you can "Get your sex life back".

Dr. Jain, how do you handle this challenging role considering what you do is considered a kind of social taboo?

While I agree with you on the social taboo part, I have to say that people are now not so shy anymore. Things have evolved a lot from when I started my practice over a decade ago. They’re now more outspoken and do not mind sharing intimate problems if they are convinced that it can help them. Of course, a cordial relationship between a doctor and the patient certainly helps. I must say that I am privileged to somehow have this ability to make each and every patient of mine feel completely at ease and open up to me about their issues. I basically focus on treating my patients with a combination of ayurvedic and modern medicines and latest technology,.and by God’s grace, I am able to deliver excellent results too

How long have you been serving and curing such patients?

For me, it has been a little over a decade now. Helping people effectively deal with problems in life related to their sexuality is what I specialise in and this specialisation has been in my family for generations. The foundation stone was laid back in 1926 by my great grandfather, Late Rajvaidya  Chandrasen Jain, which was later continued by my grandfather. Late Rajvaidya Chandra Kumar Jain, and then my father Dr. S.K. Jain, who is also my role model.

For my contribution to the field of reproductive health, I have been awarded by many well known personalities including Mr. Vankaiah Naidu (Vice President of India), Mr. J.P. Naddha (BJP National President), Yogi  Aditya Nath (Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh), Dr. Harsh Vardhan (Health Minister), Mr. Nitin Gatkari (Central Cabinet Minister), Mr. Matt Bevin (Governor of Kentucky, USA) and Mr. Greg Fischer (Mayor Of Louisville, USA).

What inspired you to choose this challenging field?

When I completed my medical education I saw many myths and conception prevailing in the society regarding sex education and sexual problems. I decided to pursue my further education in sexual medicine and infertility because there are very few specialized doctors in this field and I wished to provide correct sexual treatment and sex eduation to our society.

What leads to sexual weakness and disability?

The most common reason is stress. Then there could be several other reasons that affect reproductive health like smoking, drinking, recreational drugs, habit of prescription drugs, and even poor eating habits and poor hygiene. In most of the cases, I can see a combination of several factors that lead to sexual weakness of disability. However, what is important is that in most of the cases, the patient can be treated successfully.

Is sexual disability a leading cause of divorce?

Happiness in married life is closely interlinked with the couple’s intimate relationship. Most partners or spouses are generally understanding and sympathetic when it becomes clear that one of them has a problem. Later, there arises a pattern of anxiety, avoidance and then, at times total refraining from any type of sexual activity.

Soon, both partners start feeling alone, guilty and sometimes angry. The person who is experiencing the problem may be too embarrassed to get professional help, and may even feel guilty for refraining from doing so. The partner without the dysfunction may also be angry because they feel entitled to a sex life.

If such problems are dealt with in a timely manner, it can definitely help cure any sort of disability to perform sexual acts and save many a relationship. When couples wait too long to get help, one partner may become emotionally detached. They feel that their needs have been ignored for so long that they don't believe they can love and depend on their partner.

With so much dissatisfaction, avoidance and anger between the partners, it is sad and not too uncommon for the couple to end their relationship. What I want everyone to know, understand and appreciate, is the fact that almost each one of us has had to struggle at some level when it comes to having a satisfactory sexual life. There is so much misinformation going around that this kind of a problem has become very prevalent. And, it is as easy to deal with. What is needed is professional help and an attitude to not just give up.

I sincerely hope to help such couples save their family as I believe that sexual disability is one of the leading causes of divorces in India. I am of the opinion that one should get help sooner rather than later so that they can enjoy marital bliss and not be worried over performance issues that may be of psychological or physical origins.

Does a satisfactory sexual life lead to overall happiness too?

Definitely yes. If a person is happy and satisfied with the quality of his or her private life and intimate relationships, they are found to be mostly satisfied with the world around them. Whereas, any dissatisfaction or frustration in one’s intimate relationship mostly leads to stress, frustration, mood swings, anger or even depression in individuals. This is where an expert sexologist can be of immense help.

What efforts are you making to bring a change in the society regarding sex education and sex problems?

I am of strong opinion that quality sex education must be imparted in the schools so that the teenagers are comfortable discussing their queries or apprehensions with their parents, teachers or counsellors without feeling embarassed and in absence of any fear of being ridiculed. It is important that our youngsters understand what sexuality actually is and feel comfortable about themselves. They need to appreciate that our sexuality is an important part of our lives and not something that should be treated as a stigma. Parents and teachers have a crucially  important and sensitive role to play in all this.

Are there any natural remedies to improve one's sex life or sexual weakness and disability?

Yes, of course! Exercise and meditation play a very vital role as both are stress relievers. A diet rich in Vitamins E, C and A is also beneficial. Vegetables like Spinach, broccoli, cabbage, and some fruits like peach, oranges and grapefruits must be included in the diet. The following are also good sources of the essential vitamins - almond, peanut, walnut, oatmeal etc. All these work towards building up your body and making you better for sexual activity.

Whereas for weakness or for infertility issues, one can help themselves to some extent. Honey is a spermatogenic and sexual stimulant. Dates which in hindi are known as khajoor are also very beneficial in treating sexual weakness. Fig, commonly known as anjeer too has the same effect. Black gram or urad has a very good effect in treating impotence, premature ejaculation and thinness of the semen. Almonds are useful in case of loss of sexual energy. Cardamom or elaichi if consumed everyday with milk increases sexual potency.
