A series of protests and demonstrations in the Middle East herald the beginning of the Arab Spring. The initial trigger was the self-immolation of Tarek el-Tayeb Mohamed Bouazizi, a Tunisian street vendor, in December 2010. Fuelled by reactions against oppressive regimes and a low standard of living, protests spread to Egypt and Libya, followed by uprisings in Yemen and Bahrain.
