How India Eats: Tomato, onion, potato drive veg thali cost higher in September
Lower onion and potato arrivals in the market and heavy rainfall impacting tomato output in Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra led to the higher price of TOP in September

Overall, a decrease in the cost of cooking gas prevented a further increase in thali costs, says Crisil. The cost of a 14.2 kg LPG cylinder in Delhi dropped 11 percent to Rs 803 in March this year from Rs 903 in September the previous year.
Meanwhile, the non-veg thali price declined 2 percent YoY in September as broiler chicken cost 13 percent lower in the month. Broiler prices account for 50 percent of the non-veg thali cost.

However, on a month-on-month basis, there was no difference in the price of veg thali.
The average cost of a thali is calculated based on input prices in north, south, east and west India. The data also reveals the ingredients (cereals, pulses, broiler poultry, vegetables, spices, edible oil, cooking gas) driving changes in the cost of a thali.
