Fourth generation of storied Birla clan has chaired $41 billion (revenues) Aditya Birla Group, named after his late father, for 2 decades. Industrialist's wealth shrank as shares of his aluminum maker, Hindalco, roiled by lower prices and higher costs, halved in the past 12 months, and it reported a 67% drop in net profits in a recent quarter. Cement unit Ultratech has acquired 4 factories from rival Jaypee Group in the past year for $1.4 billion.
Birla's newest venture is Bizlabs, a unit to back startups. He has also launched Aadyam, a nonprofit, to support theater.
