A nation of billions has at least a million new enterprising ideas to make hay while the sun shines. Well, literally. As the blistering Indian summer sets in, the country’s street vendors make for a riot of colourful possibilities, as their small set-ups do brisk businesses. Here are a few.

Ice-cold water
Sampath Kumar runs a mobile cart selling ice-cooled water alongside another selling branded mineral water and soft drinks on a stretch of NH-8 highway near Akshardham in Delhi. His customers are the kind who won’t buy a new bottle – like this tow-away truck driver who has stopped to refill his bottle. That’ll cost him ten rupees. Otherwise, Sampath charges two rupees for a glass of ice-cooled water. He earns around Rs 250 on a hot day like this.
